The Mission District
The Mission District is the area originally settled around the Spanish missions (i.e. the mission of Our Lady of Sorrows) where San Francisco was founded by the Spanish. The military went and occupied the area called the Presidio, while the Catholic Church founded missions in the Mission District.
The first Mass was offered there in 1776. Thus, the Latino identity of the Mission District is over two hundred years old (the Mission Burrito was invented there). It’s now growing beyond the Spanish-Mexican heritage. Although there are still many traditional Latino businesses there, it is attracting enterprises that are Peruvian, Columbian and Guatemalan. There's even foreign cinema and other more trendy things to do.
