Drinking Alcohol in China

When in a more casual drinking environment with locals, be cautious in choosing to drink alcohol. Your local companions may choose to raise their glass to you and tap your drink glass in a "cheers!" sort of way and ask you to drink the entire contents of your glass. This can happen almost every time they choose to drink from their glass. Your alcohol glass may seem small at the outset, but after 10 or more rounds... well, you get the idea.

This is very true. I once attended a Chinese wedding that was all about drinking people under the table. The Chinese always drink this white liquor that's like vodka but much stronger called Mao Tai. It is said to be able to be lit on fire. One sneaky thing to do, which you would never want to get caught by your Chinese host doing, is substitute your shot class with water every so often. I realized after the wedding ended, those who did not go under the table apparently applied this method, so it might not be forgiven but it's nice to know you're not the only one applying this method!
